The Golf Courise at Villamartin

Beautiful holidays

If you are considering trying a holiday in a place you have never been before, I highly recommend Spain to you. This country is situated among the most beautiful in the world and it attracts millions of tourists every year, who choose Spain because of the wonderful landscapes and all the places that are just waiting to be discovered. Somewhere near Alicante, in the Costa Blanca region, you’ll find Villamartin. Villamartin Golf Club is the perfect destination for those who love this sport.

Tips for a perfect holiday

The place is amazing, but in order to feel perfectly at home, you need a few tips. First of all, you have to know that the Villamartin Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in the area, so it is much respected. When you decide that this is what you want, book your place, because there is a very high interest in this golf club, so high in fact that you might have the bad luck of not finding space. After booking, confirm your reservation; if you don’t do this, the owners will give your place to somebody else, as they consider that you might have changed your mind. Another important thing for you to know is that the Villamartin Golf Course is not the longest, nor the largest in Spain, but it is definitely among some of the nicest.

When you get on the course, just enjoy your game and the view, relax and let all your problems fade away. Take maximum advantage of the golf course and just focus all your attention on the game. If you are more of a loner, don’t choose spring or autumn for visiting, because it can get very crowded. You might have a few small problems with the bunkers, which do not have a lot of sand; some of the players use the putter in order to help them get out, but they all say that the experience is worth the effort, as you will get the ball closer to the pin than you would ever have imagined.

There can also be problems with the gullies: if the fairways drop here and your drive gets lost in the lines, you don’t have to search for it. The green parts of the golf course are more rapid than on other golf courses and this may surprise you, but you should try it; you might really like it more than the others. Enjoy!

Easily Accessible Historical Taragona

The historical city of Tarragona sits majestically at the top of a rocky hill way above the raging sea. It has seen the likes of Iberians and Carthaginians as well as the Romans who conquered this peninsula in 218 BC when Scipio went up against Hannibal.

Strategic location

Taragona became Augustus’ imperial resort when Tarraco became Rome’s capital. It grew to become the best Roman Spain cultured city with 250,000 inhabitants. Emperors were frequent visitors to this handsome affluent resort for its fine setting of beautiful Roman ruins and splendid museums that are medieval in culture. A rocky coastline opens up to some pleasant beaches. It only takes a one and a half hour bus or train ride from Barcelona for a day trip but a one night stay is also possible through earlier reservations for accommodation, especially during peak season like July or August.

City Attractions

The main attraction lies at the upper part of the town called the sweeping Rambla Nova which offers many quaint cafes and eateries; it forms quite a competition for Barcelona for its cuisine offering. Close by is the Rambla Vella which means starting section of the old quarter. You can discover amazing Roman relics on both sides of these ramblas in the forms of temples, forum and amphitheatre structures. However, these sites are closed on Mondays. Public transportation
Regular train service every half hour allows the visitor much convenience in dropping by this town; a pleasant 90 minute journey from Sants Estació allows you to reach Tarragona easily to enjoy this quaint town.

The train station is very close to Rambla Nova where you can begin your exploration of the town easily as everything is close by. The bus terminal is easily available at the end of Rambla Nova. Buses from Barcelona are also very frequent; more than 18 times plying the road every day taking 90 minutes for each run. For those who prefer a more comfortable ride opt for a taxi at the Moto Club on Rambla Nova or a bus or train stations.

Tourist information

The local tourism office is located at Calle Major 39 in the old quarter area. Seasonal tourist information booths are available in the months of July to September at the Imperial Plaza or during the start of the festival Via Augusta. Bank offices are located at Rambla Nova. Money changes, travelers’ checks and hold mail services can be performed at Viajes Eurojet if the bank is unavailable. American Express services are handled here too. Tarazona, Spain

The town of Tarazona is also known as Mudejar City. Tarazona is quite unique actually, an amazing place to visit if you are a tourist. The town was set at the bottom of Moncayo Mountain, even though little terrain was available on which to actually raise a city. It features memorable street designs, built on top of the Queiles River quays, medieval building and street design and a rich history. In the past, the Argon kings once lived there. Overall, Tarazona is an amazing and cultural place, a very fitting place to visit if you want to relax and are passionate about history.

Amongst many tourist attractions, you can visit the Gothic Cathedral of the city. The building’s construction began in the 1200s and was completed much later, in the 1600s. This is the main attraction in Tarazona. Even though by the time the cathedral was actually completed, Spain was in the Catholic period, we can also observe some interesting Mujedar style design on the Gothic Cathedral. This style can be observed the best in the lantern tower. The dome is very much the same as the one of the Zaragoza Cathedral.

You can also go to the Town Hall, called the Ayuntamiento, featuring the relief of Isabella and Ferdinand, following the conquering of Granada. This impressive monument is located on a hill in the Plaza de Espana, which features an amazing view of the city. This is one of the best views in town. If you follow the tourist route even further, you will find a place called the Santa Magdalena church. This church features a Mujedar tower as well. Further up the route, you will find another church called La Concepcion, which also features a Mujdar tower as well.

In the past, before the Jews were expelled in 1492, the town of Tarazona had a flourishing Jewish population living in the old town. We cannot find many remains from that period of time today, though. The town’s alleys feature the same Spanish and Moorish design that we were talking about and some amazing structures. Some houses are constructed on natural rock formations and above the caves in which the town’s Jewish population were kept. We can also observe a mysterious medieval building in the middle of the old town. The experts do not really know what it is, but the majority believes that is was once a Talmud Torah. A group of Jewish researchers are working to restore the building.

Quaint Town of Velez Malaga

Velez Malaga may not be a popular resort at the moment due to its off track location but it is actually only 5km away from Torre del Mar, if you are visiting the Costa del Sol region. It is a town worthy of a visit, even if as a day trip as it is barely a 5-minute drive on the coast.

Overview

Though it is not big, this town is pretty busy as the capital for the Axarquia region. It is commonly known as Velez, sitting on the River Velez valley which is beautifully surrounded with sub tropical greens. Velez is prospering as a commercial agricultural producer of vines, olives, strawberries, veggies and sugar cane. It is here that one can find the sweet grapes that are famously used to produce the world’s renowned Malaga Wines.

History

Velez has a deep history that originates with the Phoenicians and moved on to the Carthaginians as reflected in the many remnants discovered here. It is supposed that the infamous Mainake, the magnificent Greek city, was to have been located here and flourished under Roman rule for commerce and trade, taking on the name Menoba. The Moors occupation of this region for over eight centuries made it most famous as a commercial centre that was strategically situated. It became known as Ballix-Malaca which means the Fortress of Malaga; it was full of culture and commerce.

Places of Attraction

Among the many churches found here, the most magnificent has to be the 15th century Santa María la Mayor. It boasts of a beautiful tower that holds architectural pieces like the minaret of a mosque, which stood in its place previously. When the Christian re-conquest took over this town, this church was built over the mosque as their sign of conquest over the Moors.

Besides that, there is the Fortaleza which is a 13th century Moorish castle standing on a hilltop at Arrabal de San Sebastián which is considered Velez’s oldest district. The castle’s main tower was purposely built to overlook the town in defense and is in excellent condition today. Views from the castle showcase the serene and beautiful countryside.

Here in Velez, you will find the famous hospital called San Marcos Hospital that was established in 1487 by Catholic Monarchs. Convents and monasteries are abundant here and are worth a look for their artistic beauty. These include the lovely San Francisco, St. Jose, Santa Clara and Las Carmelitas convents. There is also a 16th century church, Santa Maria church, built in Mudejar style that showcases a triple nave as well as an amazing ceiling. Besides that there is another 15th century Mudejar church, San Juan Bautista, that is worth seeing.

An ancient palace has been converted into a municipal building; the Marquises of Beniel Palace is located in the quaint old section of San Sebastián that boasts of Mudejar architecture that displays a splendidly vaulted ceiling that can be found above the stairwell.

Spectacular Sights at Costa Calida

Costa Calida refers to the 250-kilometer coastline stretching out along the Iberian peninsula at its southeast side. Its capital is Murcia, famed as one of the country’s top places of historical and natural beauty.

Beautiful Offerings

This area offers some impressive historical sites and structures that include amazing ancient walls in the city, churches that had been mosques and a splendid Cathedral which is the city’s pride and joy. Although the building of this prized possession started in 1388 when the honorable Bishop Pedrosa laid its first piece of foundation stone, it took about four centuries to be completed as today’s spectacular wonder. The influence of culture and style over that time forms today’s impressive Cathedral, standing with 23 distinct chapels.

There is so much history in Murcia that one might be overwhelmed by seeing historical monuments at every corner. Many of these are in very good condition as much effort has been put in to restore and maintain their value and beauty.Other amazing sights are the 1748 Bishop's Palace, which is close to the amazing Cathedral, the Santa Ana Convent Church that has a history dating back to the 15th century, the San Miguel Church as well as the Almudi, which has existed since 1602.

Murcia City

Murcia may be a smaller Spanish region, but its natural beauty has been sculptured by the different cultures and influences of Carthaginians, Moors and Romans between southern Andalucia and northern Valencia.

Murcia was declared Europe’s healthiest and best climate spot by the WHO with its perpetual sunshine throughout the year. It is an excellent spot for avid sunbathers. Geographically, Murcia offers stark contrasts of dry plains and rich cultivation that brings forth its variety of vegetables and fruits, such as apricots, grapes, oranges and lemons. Tarragona

If you wish to have a great holiday and learn many interesting things at the same time, Spain is the ideal country to visit. Sharing the Iberian Peninsula with Portugal, it is a country full of history and wonderful places to visit; and Spaniards are very kind and sociable. As you can see, you will definitely enjoy your stay here.

“The most pleasant place to rest”

The biggest and the most productive fishing port in Catalonia, Tarragona has a population of approximately 100 000 inhabitants. Three centuries ago, this city, known by the Romans as Tarraco, became the capital of this vast empire. The Roman poet Virgilius said about Tarragona that it is “the most pleasant place to rest”. Nowadays, people here earn their living from oil, the petrochemical industry and, last but not least, from tourism.

Why Tarragona?

Contemporary Tarragona lies to the west of the cathedral located on the hill, and the Roman memory is lost in a network of streets from the XIXth and the XXth centuries. This is a provincial city that has never known the architectural projects of modern structures, like Barcelona or Girona, for example. Archaeologists keep finding all kinds of monuments in this region. In 2000, this region became recognized as a UNESCO heritage. A temperate climate, sandy beaches and a large number of fisherman’s dishes are only a few of the extra points in favor of this calm city.

As you climb the walls from the IIIrd or the IInd centuries BC and you follow “Passeig Arqueologic”, you begin to understand the importance of the largest and oldest Roman province in Iberia. These sandstone blocks, about 12 meters high, and entirely restored, surrounded three terraced levels in the past: a huge temple, the forum (known also as the square) and the vast Roman circus. This circus hosted about 30 000 out of the 40 000 of inhabitants of Torraco in good times.

Magnificent views

For a beautiful panorama, go and visit Pretoria (Praetorium), a stone tower and the former palace of the counts in Barcelona. An elevator will take you to the top of this tower where the city panorama opens. Don’t miss the small-scale reproduction of the city and take a look on the first floor to admire the splendid engraved sarcophagus that shows the legend of Hippolytus. All history lovers should go and see “Museo Arqueologic”, to admire the beautiful Roman artifacts. The aqueduct in Tarragona, the cathedral or the large number of mosaics must definitely please your eye in Spain, and even moreso in these counties!

Ubeda and  Baleza

Places in Andalusia and Murcia

Ubeda and Baeza are two beautiful places in the region of Andalusia and Murcia. Ubeda and Baeza are situated just eight kilometers from one another and they are both designated as World Heritages by UNESCO. They are both situated in Jaen Province and have been so designated because of their unique Renaissance architectural style.

Ubeda

Ubeda was built by Ubbadat al-Arab and used to be one of the most important cities in the Moorish region of Al-Andalus. After Fernando the 3rd conquered Ubeda in 1234, the city became the base of his fight against the Muslims, arriving at its peak in the 14th century when American gold was draining into Spain. The result was a group of buildings situated in the old part of the city that have not been touched by modern civilization, the same group that now attracts millions of tourists who are amazed by their beauty.

Situated on the beach, facing towards the El Salvador Church, the City Hall on its left and the Santa Maria, Palacia del Maeques de Mancero and the old barn on its right, Ubeda has been famous for a long time because of its dark green enamel ceramic objects. Go towards Calle Valencia, just a few meters to the north of Puerta del Losal, one of the old gates of the city; here you will find the craftsmen at work. On your way there, make a stop at the San Pablo Church, situated in the old square, an early Gothic church decorated with beautifully sculptured portals.

Baeza

Baeza, the cousin of Ubeda, has a similar Renaissance architectural heritage. The Renaissance buildings in Baeza are better integrated into the structure of the modern city than those in Ubeda, making Baeza look less like a museum and more like a place where the two periods have smoothly combined. If you want to see the most impressive building in Baeza, go to the Plaza Santa Cruz where you’ll find the exceptional Palacio de Jabalquinto.

The facade of the palace is a masterpiece of delicate Flamboyant sculpture, with diamond shaped ornaments. The social centre of Baeza is the Plaza de la Constitucion, an oval shaped square where people meet in order to spend some quality time together. If you want to visit Spain, Baeza and Ubeda are two destinations that will definetely provide one of the most beautiful holidays you’ve ever had.

The Troglodyte Settlements

Andaluzia and Murcia

Andaluzia and Muricia are characterized by a savage and abrupt sierra, by green valleys, hectares of olive groves, snowy peaks, the blue of the Mediterranean Sea, hillside villages, an amazing string of Moorish castles and Renaissance mansions. How can you not love the region? Choose it as your holiday destination and you’ll find that the history, the tradition and and the culture of Spain are still alive.

The troglodyte settlements

Andaluzia and Murcia is the region in Spain where the troglodyte settlements are found. The arid limestone area of the Almeria and eastern Granada provinces were one of the first regions in Europe to be inhabited, more than a million years ago. The country is still populated by the so-called men of the caves, the troglodytes, but the TV antennas of our day, including the satellites and the alarms against thieves show that modernity has touched these places.

The distinctive chimneys, white -plastered and belonging to the troglodyte settlements fill the landscapes that surround Guadix, situated at just 54 kilometers from Granada. These settlements have extended north and east, towards Sierra de Baza, Orce and beyond the Cuevas de Almanzora. Guadix is the most accessible city among them, but tourists should know one thing: the citizens of the city might not treat kindly those tourists who watch them indiscreetly; they consider this to be rude. Guadix is sprinkled with buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries.

When you arrive there you will also be directed to Ermita Nueva, or the caves zone, behind the Santiago Church. It is a unique place, one that will impress you for a long time. On your way, make a stop at the Museo de Alfareria, a pottery museum situated in a restored settlement in a cave. Just a little bit further you will find the Cueva Museum, a charming reconstruction of a settlement; it even has furniture, antiques and household utilities. Purrulena, 6 kilometers away from Guadix, also has numerous cave settlements and Baza, another 44 kilometers away, is the place where the Dama de Baza sculpture was found.

Having fun

This holiday destination is perfect for a family, a couple, for someone who decides to visit Spain with their friends or for someone who travels alone because it has a little bit of everything: modernism, history, landscapes, tradition, and culture.

Rias Baixas

Why Spain?

Are you in search for the best, the perfect holiday destination? Well, search no more, because the answer is simple: Spain. It is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe and in the entire world. Its regions are similar, but still have something distinctive from each other, making them unique. The northwest of Spain is one of the most visited regions thanks to its beauty. This part of the country will delight you with Galicia, La Coruna, Saint Jacob’s Road, Santiago de Compostela (one of the most famous pilgrimage cities in the world, the one that attracts millions of tourists from all corners of the Globe), Costa Verde, Pontevedra, and, last but not least, Rias Baixas.

Everything about Rias Baixas

The long arms of the Galician coast resembling fiords are known as “rias”. The ones between Noia and Vigo are known as Rias Baixas, the lower ones, in order to be distinguished from the Rias Altas. Situated on the more exposed northern coast and curved towards A Caruna, the Rias Baixas represent the preferred seaside region of the tourists of Galicia.

Sightseeing in Rias Baixas

The Romano-Celtic fortified villages (castras), and the dolmens (prehistoric graves), the silos (horreos), the mansions (pazos), and the churches built in Romanesque style can be seen here at every step. Some places are over appreciated, such as Arousa Island despite its Bird Reservation. As a tourist, you should rather head towards the enchanting city of Cambadas. Pazo de Fefinanes dominates the main 16th century square. It is a majestic example of a Renaissance Palace decorated with stone busts and heraldic arms that represent the departure point for the arched bridge that leads to the San Sandurnino Tower.

Over the square, the San Benedict Church rises. The vineyards around the city produce the Albarino white wine, slightly fruited and sparkling. You can also visit the traditional wine basements that are numerous in this area. Baiona is also a city in the Rias Baixas, the most southern one, having fortified walls pertaining to Castelo de Monte Real. It is the place where the citizens used to shelter from pirate attacks. Doesn’t it sound entertaining? You will definitely have many things to learn if you visit this region, things regarding the history, the tradition and the cultural background of this wonderful country that is Spain. Enjoy your holiday!

There are a variety of happenings here, from beach fun to gastronomy delights. You will find shop after shop at the beach or the central Plaza selling all types of clothing, foods, and yoga services, as well as water-sports items to the beach crowd that loves to gather here. All these make this place very bohemian and trendy. Although there are plenty of beaches here it is not the best place for sun bathing, as the more popular past-time is surfing with the steady local winds encouraging it. Thus, sandstorms are kicked up, making it uncomfortable and cold for any sun-bather. Hiking is the alternative where two nature sites, Montaña Roja (west of town) and Montaña Pelada (east of town), are worth checking out.

Easter week is a hive of activity at El Médano when the young islanders flock here to party with a sudden springing up of tented villages on the beach, and big camper vans full of windsurfing enthusiasts. The main building at El Médano is the multilevel plaza, Plaza Principe de Asturia, which has many cafes and restaurants all around lining the main beachside. There exists a big boardwalk heading west over some distinct shaped rocks that are actually sandstone to an area where windsurfers can put their gear together for a good surf. Another coastal road will take you east to some quiet beaches with more fantastic wind conditions for surfing.

Natural Beauty

At the coastline, there are two impressive hills made up of very uniquely shaped volcanic rock at the east and west of the town. The Montaña Roja stands at a height of 171 m on the west while the Montaña Pelada looms majestically on the east. The Montaña Roja serves as a nature reserve center that protects the existing dune ecosystem. There are delightful treks along and around this mountain displaying beautiful sceneries. The magnificent Montaña Pelada boasts of a volcanic crater caused by seawater influx of some volcanic eruptions. There are also many good and refreshing hiking trails here that lead to a haven for nudist sunbathers on the west side. Alternatively, you can explore the mountain area by mountain bike.

Gastronomy & Accommodation Wonders at Galicia

The Spaniards love to feast. And, Galicia is certainly the place to be if you love seafood. It serves the best and freshest seafood cuisine in the whole of Spain, hands down. You will find this delicacy in any bar or restaurant in some variant or other within this region.

Seafood Delights

Rias Baixas proves to be the biggest shellfish producer in Spain which includes clams, mussels, crabs, perecebes, cockles, oysters and lobsters. These are truly abundant and well priced with the freshness of the catch still lingering from the fishing boat when served on the plate. You will find these shellfish all over the beach as you take a stroll at low tides. However, you are not allowed to gather up these precious treasures of the sea as these serve the livelihood of the locals. Much of these shellfish are also being cultivated locally in the local cooperatives to maintain the high quantity for the demanding tourist industry here.

The feisty festival Seafood Feria at O’Grove is a worthy stop in October, displaying every variant of fresh seafood delicacy at rock bottom prices. It is a must for seafood lovers when in Spain. Tourists all over Spain will flock to this region for this Festa de Marisco once a year around October 6th to the 15th. The fresh seafood goes extremely well with Galicia’s very fine Red and White wines at this beautiful coastline.

Accommodations

There are many types of accommodation available in this region, which are located at different landscapes offering unique sceneries such as the hillside Los Abetos, which always scores highly with its visitors. Not only is it at Mount Gozo’s foothills, it has gardens and lush Galician countryside all around.

Quite contrasting is the historical monastery that has been converted into an impressive hotel, called the San Francisco Monumento, with a garden space of 30,000 square meters.  Alternatively, Hotel Compostela is more a town hotel at the city center with modern amenities in an historical structure. Some of these historical structures are gazette as heritage sites by UNESCO.

There is another cozy hotel in O´Grove quite close to the beaches, which was renovated in 2006, and offering delicious cuisine. The natural view is splendid, especially the sunsets. The up market hotel is the Gran Hesperia La Toja, which is a 5-star hotel with a spa in Galicia. It is a historical structure with a huge garden on Toja Island, which is a protected nature’s reserve. There are also warm waters for one’s relaxation and enjoyment.
